ABOUT SLOVENIA
WHERE IS
SLOVENIA
?
The Republic of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe and has borders
with Hungary, Austria, Italy and Croatia – although, since the introduction of
The Schengen Agreement in December 2007, borders have now been removed with all
but Croatia, therefore making it very simple to travel to our neighbouring
countries. You could combine your
holiday in
Slovenia
with visiting one of our neighbours but we believe that we have more than
enough to offer you here!
WHY VISIT
SLOVENIA
?
As a small country,
Slovenia
makes a great tourist
destination. There are no long journeys involved in getting from A to B, no
long airport transfers and a great variety of sights, sounds, smells and tastes
within easy reach. If you wish, you can
ski or hike in the morning and be lazing by the coast of the
Adriatic
Sea
in the afternoon.
In
Slovenia
,
the sun shines approximately 2,000 hours per year. And there is plenty of snow
in winter. The average temperatures are -2°C in January and 21°C in July. Climatic conditions in
Slovenia
vary
due to the 3 climate zones. There is a Continental climate in the northeast, an
Alpine climate in the high mountain regions, and a sub-Mediterranean climate in
the coastal region.
Green is the dominant colour. There are many woods and forests in
Slovenia
–
covering more than 50% of the country – and numerous preserved and protected
plant and animal species. Mountains, lakes, waterfalls, forests, caves, hills,
plains, rivers and the sea - you name it, we've got it in the 20.273 km2, as
well as many natural and landscape parks.
The highest mountain is called Triglav - the name meaning
"three-heads" - and it is 2864m high. The mountain is a true national
symbol, featured on the national coat of arms and the flag.
The country is also known for its great wines and delicious traditional food. |

THE
JULIAN ALPS
Our holidays are based in the
North
West
of the country in the region of The Julian Alps
and The Karavanke Alps and the resorts and beautiful lakes of Bled and Bohinj. Also nearby are the ski resorts of Kranjska
Gora, Krvavec, Kobla and Vogel. Also
nearby are the towns of Bovec and Kobarid in the
Soča
Valley
, famous for its beautiful
unbelievably green
Soča
River
.
Most of the area is within the Triglav National Park which measures 83,807 hectares and is one of the largest
natural parks in
Europe
. The park lies in the
vicinity of high stony mountains including Mount Triglav (2864 m); the highest
mountain
of
Slovenia
- and deep river gorges, highland karst potholes and friendly highlands. The
area has many endemic animal and plant species, among them there are chamois,
mountain sheep, wild roosters, grouse, eagles and marmots as well as
interesting flora which your guides will be able to enlighten you about. Slovenes have a use for many of the flowers
and trees for making tea or natural remedies. You can sample Planinski
čaj (mountain tea) at many of the mountain huts situated atop mountains
throughout the country together with one of the many delicious soups and stews
that are a speciality of this region. Whilst staying in Bled, don’t miss the opportunity to taste the famous
Bled cake, a custard and cream slice, perfect after all those active days! |
